Musings On Fear And Courage: What Are We Eventually Heading To?

By Tobias Zimpel | Jan 17, 2008

When you look at our society, what would you say describes its general state best:

  • Fear
  • Courage

A short while ago, I would have said that Fear would be the best overall description - with some meaningful exceptions of course, who only prove the rule. But now, I see things changing - and rapidly.

There are more and more courageous people around, people who dare to dream and not only dream it, but live it.

Fearful persons <-> fearful society

A fearful person will most of the time worry about what might go wrong. They could lose their job, their significant other might leave them for someone else, their cat could fall out of the window, and a gazillion of other things might go wrong - or not? I am sure you get the point.

In a fearful society, people live under the constant influence of fear and worry, spread by the media, by the government and by most of their peers. Even courageous people need a lot of strength to not lose their courage.

So in the end, fearful persons and a fearful society will reinforce each other.

Transitioning from fear to courage

Still, there are people around who are really courageous and stay courageous despite all negative influences. Some are known only by their peers, and some are known by nearly the whole human race. And a lot of them are somewhere in between. But all have - or can have - a positive influence on their environment.

It takes a lot of courage to go for your dreams in a fearful society - and a lot of fear to not go for your dreams in a courageous society. But how can we transition our society to a courageous one? Well, we are already in the middle of this process!

As more and more courageous people really go for their dreams - and do so in a way that others recognize -, others will eventually be inspired to go for their own dreams. This is a process that always existed, but at the moment, I see a rapid acceleration. There are a few highly conscious and courageous people who influence millions of others worldwide, and these millions, as they become more courageous, influence their direct peers.

As I see it, we are already at the doorstep where a positive reinforcement cycle will begin that will eventually lead to a courageous society where courage will be the normal state of being - and the one that will be reinforced.

Then whenever someone sinks back to fear, others will be in place to help.
