Change Your Life In 30 Days: Build And Keep Momentum

By Tobias Zimpel | Jan 7, 2008

This article is part of the series on How To Change Your Life In 30 Days.

When you have a goal and a good plan at hands, you are ready to do the transition. If not, the above links will bring you back to these steps.

If you followed my advice, you will have done your best to make it as easy as possible to stick to your plan. But still things might get tough eventually. Here’s my advice on how to get started, and how to keep going to the end no matter what.

How to get started

My single est advice on how to finally launch your 30 Day Trial Period is this: Don’t think to much, but just get into action mode. Just do what you planned to do.

First, implement the steps to change your environment as you planned, and then start doing whatever you committed to do.

If you have a few doubts whether you are on the right track, be OK with it: That’s why you try it for only 30 days - and afterwards, you will be more certain whether it is right for you or not.

You may want to use visualization to intensify your positive feelings and expectations. That is extremely useful if you tend to think on what may go wrong or are afraid that you are able to stick to our plan. However, If you have serious doubts about your plan, they are probably there for a reason, and I highly recommend that you consider these well before you go further with your plan.

A great visualization technique is to visualize success. Get all of your senses involved, and imagine a scene that connects your experience with positive feelings instead of your uncertainty and doubt. For example, if you want to start a sports program, imagine how you are eager to do sports, how good you will feel, and how your body will become fitter and fitter every time you go through your training.

How to keep momentum

When you have started, visualizations are also a great way to keep a positive attitude even when you find it harder than expected. You can even go through different scenes and compare them to each other to find the one that will lead you to success.

You will still need a certain amount of self discipline and willpower to succeed, but if you did your job well, you have minimized the need for both beforehand. The first few days will probably the hardest, as you have to go through an adjustment period. Your new habit will feel new and probably unfamiliar to you, and maybe you even forget that you wanted to change. That’s OK. Just get back on track and continue - and don’t forget to put up a reminder just in case you forget again. Eventually your new habit will feel more natural than your old behaviour, and after at most 21 days (usually at least), the first phase will end and you will become accustomed to your new habit. Then you have still some days left to examine it from an insider’s position.

Look for problems that may arise, and if you struggle, find out why, and then do something that will help you to keep on track. That is roughly the same process you went through to prepare, but now you will deal with real world data instead of expectations, so this is even more powerful!
