Change Your Life In 30 Days: How To Prepare

By Tobias Zimpel | Jan 6, 2008

This article is part of the series on How To Change Your Life In 30 Days.

One question on the Try Before You Bey Template was “What can I do to make things easier to begin with or follow through?”. I thought I better clarify this a bit and give you some examples, sou you see how this part could look like.

The basic idea is that your direct environment influences your ability to stick to your goals: It can either support you, or it can constantly put roadblocks in the way to your goal. So answering this question requires that you identify what obstacles might come in you way, and prepare for them to the best of your abilities (or with the 80-20-rule in your mind, if you are smart).

As an example, I use a dietary change: You plan to eat healthier for the next 30 days. I asume that you have been specific in how exactly your new diet will be like, and what it contains or not contains.

So here is a list of some things you might want to do in order to make things easier beforehand and help you to stick to your plan even if the road becomes rough from time to time.

  1. Throw away all food that you are not going to eat (as long as no other member of the family eats them). If you don’t see unhealthy food, it will be easier to not eat them.
  2. Separate your foods from other foods that you don’t want to eat, especially the ones that you may find hard to let go of. Same reason as above.
  3. Post receipts for meals you intend to eat in the kitchen to make it easier to prepare these meals instad of the ones that you are most familiar with.
  4. Make the foods you intend to eat the most visible ones - the more obvious they are visually, the more obvious a choice will they become when you look around for something to eat.
  5. Prepare meals in advance, so when you get hungry, you are more likely to eat something healthy, instead of the easy-to-prepare microwave meals.
  6. Keep healthy snacks with you when you go out, so you have something healthy to eat at hands when “the little hunger” kicks in.
  7. Post your reward(s) for 30 days of success where you will need it most, so you have something available to motivate you.

Maybe you have some other ideas on what you can do. Make a list that fits your individual situation, because it is all about your success, not the success of someone else.

I invite you to post your own lists in the comments to share them with others. Also, if you have additional ideas on how to prepare, have a hard time with it, or want to share your own story to inspire others, please use the comment form or send me a private message using my contact form.
